AI-powered healthtech company moves to the Edmonton region

AI Rehab, a healthtech company based in the United Kingdom, has officially chosen the Edmonton Metropolitan Region as the home base for its North American software and artificial intelligence (AI) operations — reinforcing the region’s growing reputation as a global hub for AI and machine learning.

AI Rehab is using AI to change the way we do physical rehabilitation. Their flagship product is a physical device designed to measure patient knee movements and transmit real-time data to their proprietary system. Behind the scenes, AI-driven analytics assess the patient’s progress, provide insights on their recovery, and help tailor rehabilitation programs; their system is precision healthcare in action, where every datapoint contributes to smarter recovery. AI Rehab is exploring the gamification of therapy to boost patient engagement and improve outcomes.

This system is especially powerful in addressing knee-related rehab — an area deeply personal to the company’s founder, Shameem Sampath, who underwent intensive knee surgery after battling polio as a teen. That lived experience informs a deep understanding of patient needs and the power of customized care.

The company’s presence in the region connects them with the local innovation ecosystem. AI Rehab participated in Cohort 6 of the Community Safety and Wellness (CSW) Accelerator, tapping into mentorship and market access.

CSW Accelerator is pleased to see AI Rehab select the Edmonton region as their North America HQ,” Ashif Mawji, Chair of the CSW Accelerator, said. “The Scaleup GAP program, powered by Alberta Innovates, has helped companies like AI Rehab see firsthand the value proposition that Alberta offers and the incredible talent, low cost of living, access to world-class AI resources and much more, right here, in the Edmonton region.”

The company is also actively engaged with Amii (the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute) and the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital — both of which were instrumental in the company’s establishment in the region.

“Alberta is a technology powerhouse with a compelling ecosystem to attract and support investment growth. AI Rehab’s decision to establish its North American headquarters in the Edmonton region is a powerful signal that Alberta’s medtech sector is globally competitive and thriving. AI Rehab’s expansion [is] about more jobs, more talent development, and better health outcomes powered by AI,” Raja Mita, Vice-President of Health at Alberta Innovates, said.

As the company continues grows, they look to draw from the region’s pool of data scientists and entry-level programmers. With customized rehab experiences powered by AI, the company’s long-term vision is clear: make rehabilitation more accessible, adaptive, and data-driven.
